The Robocat Blog

A stream by the iOS developers over @robocat. We build stuff.

I’ve already had a few people suggest this, and i understand the sentiment, but here’s why it won’t be part of Outside. First of all Outside already has a pretty neat way of showing todays temperature - in fact Outside is build around that central piece of information smack in the middle of every screen. Having a separate screen for something like this would be kinda redundant. The visual language and the analogy that we’ve got going in Outside (looking out the window) just doesn’t seem very compatible with the idea we’ve got going here (looking at the thermometer). One app can only handle so many visual analogies without becoming over designed.

We feel that Thermo, conceptually, is a completely different thing than the full blown weather forecasting that Outside is. Not only is the graphic style different, but the idea is also that this truly is just about the temperature and nothing else. There seem to be a lot of people who just want the temperature, so this is an app aimed towards that kind of simplicity. It allows us to keep it small and nimble, start up time will (hopefully) be quicker than Outside, and we’ll be able to price it accordingly, making it more available to a broader audience. (more on this later)

Ultimately working something like this into the existing framework of Outside would, both conceptually and technically, add weeks of development to attain a feature that’s basically already in Outside. We feel that time is better spend elsewhere.

At times when you want a more detailed weather forecast you’ll use Outside, but for those quick  moments when you just want a glance at the Temperature you’ll use something like Thermo. In the end, it’ll probably cater to two very different kinds of people in different situations.
